Authentic Italian Cold Sandwiches – 3 Classic Recipes

Italian Tramezzini

Tramezzini are simple sandwiches made with soft white bread (pan carré). They are famous all over Italy, but the most special ones can be found in the north. They remind me of my childhood Sundays when I ate them as an afternoon snack, then later in high school as a quick lunch, and now as an adult as a light afternoon bite. They are very easy to prepare and can be made with endless fillings.

The Secret to Perfect Tramezzini

Today we’re preparing three different flavors. White sandwich bread is perfect for these sandwiches. The step I consider most important is spreading a thin layer of mayonnaise on the bread before adding the filling. This little trick not only makes them tastier but also prevents the filling from slipping out.

Ham and Cream Cheese

Ham and cream cheese are a simple but guaranteed winning combo. Remember to place the filling only in the center and stacked in height. That way, when you cut the sandwich diagonally, it will have a nice “belly” in the middle and cleaner edges. This is the correct way to stuff them because it also helps keep the filling in place when you hold them.

Tomato and Mozzarella (Caprese Style)

Another filling I love is a Caprese-style sandwich, but without basil. Slice a large tomato and place the slices on a piece of bread, add a pinch of salt, and then layer mozzarella slices on top. I recommend using a mozzarella that isn’t too watery, otherwise the bread will soak through. Small, firm mozzarella blocks work perfectly for this.

Tuna, Egg, and Mayonnaise

Finally, my favorite filling: tuna, eggs, and mayonnaise. A classic combination that never fails. Cook two hard-boiled eggs and slice them. First, spread some mayonnaise on the bread, then add well-drained tuna in olive oil, and finally place the egg slices on top. This mix of flavors works beautifully and will give you so much satisfaction!
